The Arrogant Worms- Deadly PENTOS!

Introduction

Isn’t it always easy to avoid people and situations which are easily visible to the eyes. Size does matter, right? But what about the things which you can’t even see or feel? How then can you gauge their impact on your lifestyle? One such example is of the microscopic worms. Though barely visible through the naked eyes, once they are inside you, they can even prove to be deadly. One should be aware of such kinds of deadly agents, especially when they are all around you. Read more to find out- what and how.

Flatworms (Platyhelminth)

Flatworms

The two most common varieties found are (taenia solium, taenia saginata). These worms are cosmopolitan in their distribution. They are found both in fresh and salt water. The most unique characteristic of this worm is that it is one of the most primitive forms alive. These are hermaphrodites i.e Both the male and female reproductive organs are present in the same body.

Causative Agents

These worms enter the body through the consumption of uncooked or raw cattle meat. The embryonated eggs enter the body of the host, humans, where they travel to the large intestine and mature. After the full development, the eggs are released into the feces of the host. From where they enter in the soil and wait for their intermediate host, cattle.

Disease Caused

The species, (taenia solium) is the major cause for the deadly condition known as Neurocysticercosis, an ailment of the nervous system. The larvae of this species of worm cause epilepsy. It is a disorder in which nerve cell activity in the brain is disturbed, causing seizures. It is almost impossible to cure. The other species, (taenia saginata) has no such deadly symptom when it comes to humans. But when the number of worms increases in the body the common symptoms include dizziness, loss of appetite, nausea, abdominal pain and sometimes chronic indigestion.

Diagnosis

Stool examination is one of the ways to diagnose any kind of disease which is caused by the worms belonging to this species.

Treatment

Hit and trail shouldn’t affect one as along as it doesn’t have any side effects. Who knows when luck favors? Herbal medication is the best possible solution for that matter.

Hookworm (Helminthiases)

Hookworm

Have you ever been warned against walking barefoot on the grass? If yes, then this is the reason why. There are two most common types of hookworms, (ancyclostomiasis and necatoriasis). They are commonly parasitic roundworms which derive their nutrition from the blood of their host. They are comparatively more developed than the flatworms. This point is proved by the fact that these worms are unisexual i.e the male and female are different organisms with different functions to perform of their own. The male and female worms even look different under the microscope!

Causative agents

There is no intermediate agent for the infective larvae to lodge itself into the human body. The contaminated human stool is the causative agent. The eggs have the capacity to hatch in the open air, unlike the eggs of flatworm. The larvae enter the host, humans through the skin especially when walked barefoot.

Disease Caused

Hookworm infection doesn’t have a special nomenclature of it’s own. But the symptoms are definitely plenty. For example, intestinal inflammation and progressive iron-deficiency anemia and protein deficiency. Coughing, chest pain, wheezing, and fever sometimes results from severe infection. Hookworm infection and impaired learning in children have been found to have a common causality. This shows the fatal consequences of this worm larvae. Hence, do NOT walk barefoot!

Diagnosis

Stool examination is one of the ways to diagnose any kind of disease which is caused by the worms belonging to this species.

Treatment

Hit and trail shouldn’t affect one as long as it doesn’t have any side effects. Who knows when luck favors? Herbal medication is the best possible solution for that matter.

Pinworm/ Threadworms (Enterobius)

Threadworm

Itchy- itchy… around the anus? This is the reason why. The most common genus of the pinworm affecting the humans is the (Enterobius vermicularis). This species of worm is also unisexual in nature with the female much longer and bigger than the much smaller and coiled up male counterpart. This worm is distributed worldwide and mostly thrives in the tropical region.

Causative agent

The hatched eggs of this worm particularly effects the children. The infected eggs being consumed by the person is the first step at the beginning of the infection. There is no intermediate host in the life cycle of this worm, the entire growth occurs in the gastrointestinal tract of the humans. The female worm travel to the colon to lay eggs where she degenerates after the process is completed.

Disease Caused

Enterobiasis, is the name of the infection caused by the worm. Anal itching is the most common symptom of this infection but it can grow worse if the worm reaches the female vulva. This can cause vulvovaginitis, i.e. an inflammation of the vulva and vagina. This causes vaginal discharge and pruritus vulvae, i.e., itchiness of the vulva. Though not deadly but certainly irritating!

Roundworm (Ascaris lumbricoides)

Roundworm

It is a parasitic nematode, which generally affects the small intestine, hence also known as intestinal roundworm. These are one of the largest intestinal roundworms and the most common helminth as well. These are also unisexual with the female being longer and the male shorter. One unique characteristic of this worm is that as a part of the defense mechanism Ascaris roundworms secrete a series of inhibitors to target digestive and immune-related host proteases, which include pepsin, trypsin, chymotrypsin/elastase and cathepsins.

Causative Agents

Similar to the pinworms the embryonated eggs of the worms are the main causative agent. Their eggs are deposited in the human feces in the soil. From where the eggs travel to the vegetables and from there to the human intestine. The eggs hatch in the intestine, burrow through the gut wall and migrate to the lungs through the blood of the host.

Disease Caused

The infection caused is named, Ascariasis. These worms majorly affect children. Intestinal blockage is the most adverse effect of this infection. Apart from the above-mentioned effect, bowel obstruction and loss of appetite are common symptoms as well. These worms are epidemic in nature, which means that they can multiply themselves rapidly almost blocking every vessel and nerve of the host. Thereby killing the host!

Trichinella (Nematoda)

Trichinella

These are the smallest human nematode parasite. These are parasitic in nature as well, just like its other partners. It is a unisexual worm with different male and female counterparts. As a matter of fact, researches are still going on to find out more about the different varieties of this worm. A special characteristic of this particular worm, unlike other worms, is that it can infest a whole variety of animals like swine, foxes, wolves, bears, etc.

Causative Agents

The consumption of raw and partially cooked pork is the main causative agent behind the infection. The symptoms caused by the worm is divided into two phases; one during the time when the worm egg enters the host, the symptoms include nausea, heartburn, dyspepsia, and diarrhea from two to seven days after infection. The other one is the time when the worm is fully mature, the worm pores through the tissues and the body's inflammatory response results in edema, muscle pain, fever, and weakness.

Disease Caused

Trichinosis, is the name of the parasitic disease caused by the worms. Though not deadly yet difficult to cure because of the rarity of the worms the medicines also tend to be a bit rare. But the world rests on hope!

Diagnosis

The diagnosis is usually based on symptoms and confirmed by finding specific antibodies in the blood or larvae on tissue biopsy.

Treatment

Hit and trail shouldn’t affect one as along as it doesn’t have any side effects. Who knows when luck favors? Herbal medication is the best possible solution for that matter.

Stay healthy and stay blessed! Amen!
